The species name for Big Leaf Maple, is Acer macrophyllum. They are found through out the coastal redwood habitat. The tallest big leaf maple in the world was discovered this year in Humboldt Redwood State Park by Mario Vaden.

The nice thing about visiting Redwood National Park in the fall is the contrast between the evergreen coastal redwoods and the color changing of the red alders (Alnus rubra) and big leaf maple (Acer macrophyllum).
