Color spotter Phillip Reedy visited Red Lake along Carson Pass, east of Kirkwood, and found the aspen peaking with a kaleidoscope of green, lime, yellow and orange to be seen.

There’s so much color yet to develop, that Philip forecasts, Hwy 88 should have a rolling peaks for the next couple of weeks (conditions permitting).

    Hi,
My friend and I want to hike in the Red Lake / Hope Valley area on October 4 or 5. I am not familiar with hiking trails in this area. Could you give me some ideas of where we can hike where there are aspen groves?
    Thank you!

As you drive into the Red Lake area off CA-88, there is a “Y”. To the right is Red Lake, continuing straight, you reach a trailhead. ModernHiker.com and Trails.com list hiking trails in the area. There are many along Carson Pass, Hwy 88 and in the Hope Valley. Oct. 4/5 should be beautiful in that area.
