Color spotters Don Vilfer and his wife rode by horse to the upper reaches of Rock Creek in the Eastern Sierra (Mono County) to find aspen near 10,000′ in elevation near peak.

He reported, “At the end of the canyon and up at 10,000 feet the color is at 70% or so. I shot the attached on Saturday, from our camp overlooking the canyon. There are bands of color on the other side of the canyon as well and some groves at creek level that have turned.”

Do you have anything posted where I can drive along the 101 coast to see the fall colors in any of the towns up near Santa Barbara or Monterrey, CA? Thanks so much.

      Cindy,

There is very little fall color along the coast. Since most of the state’s population lives near the coast, that explains why so few Californians know the state has so much spectacular color. It’s mostly seen in the mountains, but then our state has many, many mountain ranges. However, if you’re driving up US 101, King City in the southern Salinas Valley has lovely golden and yellow color among the cottonwood that grow beside the Salinas River. They peak during the third week of October.
